{"id":22,"date":"2014-12-24T07:57:20","date_gmt":"2014-12-24T07:57:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gardenescapades.com\/blog\/?page_id=22"},"modified":"2014-12-24T20:42:09","modified_gmt":"2014-12-24T20:42:09","slug":"in-honor-of-the-greats","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/gardenescapades.com\/blog\/in-honor-of-the-greats\/","title":{"rendered":"In honor of the greats"},"content":{"rendered":"<body><p>I\u2019m creating a garden on my Seattle city lot to honor some of the great gardeners of the last century.\u00a0 This blog will document the design, plant choices and serve as a tribute to the amazing horticultural minds of the past as I study their books and ideas.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been\u00a0living on this lot way too long (19 years) without doing what needs to be done.\u00a0 My hope is that documenting the process will serve as creative motivation to get the work done and drive the process to design a wonderful little tribute garden that I can enjoy into retirement.<\/p>\n<p>The lot here is just over 5800 square feet, but the house takes up a bunch of that and we already have a woodland\/water garden built.\u00a0 There really isn\u2019t a backyard\u2013just ten narrow feet between our house and the property line.\u00a0 To utilize that challenging space, we\u2019ve created a patio and utilize potted plants and vines.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the work will need to be done in the front on either side of our driveway.\u00a0 I started an orchard garden several years ago with some amazing dwarf fruit trees (apples, cherries), berries (blackberries, three colors or raspberries and others) and unusual fruits (aronia, goumi).\u00a0 I plan to leave this as is, but to remove the depressing lawn in-between the plans and put in something more rewarding.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll be doing all the work myself while working full time, so it will be a slow process\u2013but isn\u2019t gardening always a slow process?\u00a0 And isn\u2019t that wonderful, can\u2019t-be-rushed delay where the best rewards live?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Gardening is endlessly fascinating and diverse.
