{"id":3883,"date":"2017-11-28T03:23:05","date_gmt":"2017-11-28T03:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gardenescapades.com\/blog\/?p=3883"},"modified":"2017-11-28T03:23:05","modified_gmt":"2017-11-28T03:23:05","slug":"garden-planning-at-the-cabin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gardenescapades.com\/blog\/2017\/11\/28\/garden-planning-at-the-cabin\/","title":{"rendered":"Garden Planning at the Cabin"},"content":{"rendered":"<body><p>We just spent six days up in Tonasket at the cabin.\u00a0 We were treated to a little snow, a lot of wind, and some incredibly gorgeous scenery.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When I wasn\u2019t hiking around the ranch, I was planning the 2018-and-beyond garden.\u00a0 I put two orders together from catalogs that I brought with me.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be ordering way too many seeds again, but I have plans for all of them.\u00a0 Whether I can keep up with all of that remains to be seen!<\/p>\n<p>I also did some brainstorming about what I\u2019d like to accomplish in the next 13 months in the greenhouse and garden.\u00a0 Here are my random thoughts:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Garden Ideas from the Cabin trip 11\/26\/17<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Things to Order\/Buy:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>12\/2<\/strong>\u00a0 Seeds identified from Pinetree and PHS catalogs<\/p>\n<p><strong>12\/2<\/strong> Seed starting mix from Amazon\u2014Espoma or Black Gold<\/p>\n<p><strong>12\/16<\/strong>\u00a0 Start investigating what Sky has available for manure\/compost for the parking strip bed and potting mix for delivery for all the big potting on that needs to be done<\/p>\n<p><strong>12\/16<\/strong> Order organic fertilizers for potting on and garden projects from Amazon smile<\/p>\n<p><strong>2\/16<\/strong> Order large 3-gallon pots to move Clivias into<\/p>\n<p><strong>2\/16<\/strong> Order orchid bark and moss for potting on Clivias and Cymbidiums<\/p>\n<p><strong>3\/16<\/strong> Get compost tea bags to add to water trays for the GH and shelf plants<\/p>\n<p>Start looking online and at thrift stores for patio pots to use this summer\u2014will need more of them, as will be adding some of the small trees\/shrubs to patio pots this year<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Wish List Plants and Seeds for the Future:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nicotiana sylvestris seeds<\/li>\n<li>Acanthus spinosus seeds<\/li>\n<li>Centaurea dealbata \u201cJohn Coutts\u201d seeds<\/li>\n<li>Geranium psilostemon seeds<\/li>\n<li>Incarvillea delavayi seeds<\/li>\n<li>Linum narbonense seeds<\/li>\n<li>Oenothera missouriensis seeds<\/li>\n<li>Agapanthus \u201cHeadborne Hybrid\u201d seeds<\/li>\n<li>Cyclamen coum seeds<\/li>\n<li>Cyclamen hereifolium seeds<\/li>\n<li>Erythronium revolutum plants<\/li>\n<li>Lilium regale seeds<\/li>\n<li>Nerine bowdenii bulbs<\/li>\n<li>Gentian septemfida seeds<\/li>\n<li>Ceratostigma willmottianum plant<\/li>\n<li>Daphne mezereum seeds<\/li>\n<li>Mahonia \u201cCharity\u201d plant<\/li>\n<li>Philadelphus \u201cBouquet Blanc\u201d plant<\/li>\n<li>Rhododendron \u201cYakushimanum\u201d plant<\/li>\n<li>Ruscus aculeatus plants (male and female)<\/li>\n<li>Nothofagus\u2014various species, seeds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Ideas to try in 2018:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Buy or make some window boxes to hang on the fence by the compost bins and around\u2014with vines like Thunbergera and Nasturtium<\/li>\n<li>Try growing vines up the summer-boring shrubs, like Clematis viticella hybrids up the camellia, the honeysuckle in the corner of the orchard bed, and the witch\/winter hazels (4 vines needed)<\/li>\n<li>Put some sort of netting on the wall behind the tree peony seedlings and plant Eccremocarpus scaber to grow there and maybe another fancy vine\u2014Trapaoleum speciosum, maybe? Or morning glories.<\/li>\n<li>Find another aucuba, preferable a female, to plant in the Doug Fir bed near the other one. They grow well there and not much else does!<\/li>\n<li>Plant the Paulownia tomentosa out in the garden and use it for coppicing once it settles in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Garden Projects for 2018:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The theme for 2018 is Purge and Organize<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sort through the outside shelf seedlings\n<ul>\n<li>Pot on the newest ones individually<\/li>\n<li>Repot the older ones\n<ul>\n<li>Root prune with new soil, or<\/li>\n<li>Move to larger pots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Determine a purpose for each plant\n<ul>\n<li>Bonsai<\/li>\n<li>Patio pots<\/li>\n<li>Garden<\/li>\n<li>Sales\/give-away<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Identify, document, and label the bonsai plants\n<ul>\n<li>Photos<\/li>\n<li>Labels with estimated start dates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Sort through the greenhouse plants\n<ul>\n<li>Clivias\n<ul>\n<li>As they bloom, photograph and label them so they can be identified later<\/li>\n<li>Sell\/give-away any that are no longer wanted\/needed<\/li>\n<li>Repot the remaining Clivia plants into new soil and larger pots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Cymbidiums\n<ul>\n<li>As they bloom, photograph and label them so they can be identified later<\/li>\n<li>Sell\/give-away any that are no longer wanted\/needed<\/li>\n<li>Repot the remaining Cymbidium plants into new soil and larger pots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Repot the older ones\n<ul>\n<li>Root prune with new soil, or<\/li>\n<li>Move to larger pots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Others\n<ul>\n<li>All hardy plants get moved to the garden permanently\n<ul>\n<li>Eucomis<\/li>\n<li>Sinningia tubiflora<\/li>\n<li>Ferns<\/li>\n<li>Daphniphyllum<\/li>\n<li>Persicaria\u2014move some outside<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Repot and divide the big Pleione pot when it is finished blooming<\/li>\n<li>Repot the Impatiens into a much larger pot\u2014divide it if possible<\/li>\n<li>Repot\/top dress all the streptocarpus<\/li>\n<li>Remove pots with no signs of growth (some were kept in fall just in case something is dormant in there)<\/li>\n<li>Get rid of multiples and non-performing plants<\/li>\n<li>Be RUTHLESS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Clean-up\n<ul>\n<li>Move the Clivia, Cymbidium, and Holiday Cacti to the Doug Fir bed for the warm months<\/li>\n<li>Totally clean up under the greenhouse shelves throughout the greenhouse<\/li>\n<li>Get rid of poisons<\/li>\n<li>Get rid of old tubs of dirt<\/li>\n<li>Organize pots and trays in the GH and the potting area<\/li>\n<li>Organize the space to better use the sunlight and lower light levels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Greenhouse crops\n<ul>\n<li>Try to raise some crops in large pots in the greenhouse\n<ul>\n<li>Organize the space for best light and trellises where needed\n<ul>\n<li>Cucumber (2 3-gallon pots)<\/li>\n<li>Peppers (2 3-gallon pots)<\/li>\n<li>Melons (2 3-gallon pots)<\/li>\n<li>Tomatoes (2 3-gallon pots)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We just spent six days up in Tonasket at the cabin.\u00a0 We were treated to a little snow, a lot of wind, and some incredibly gorgeous scenery. \u00a0 When I wasn\u2019t hiking around the ranch, I was planning the 2018-and-beyond garden.\u00a0 I put two orders together from catalogs that I brought with me.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be &hellip;
